I measure inside the extractor groove with a blade micrometer. Don't have any belted mags so cannot comment on them. Be careful though you can draw incorrect pressure conclusions with this method....

I'd expect much of the variation is due to age as much as it is lot variation. A lot of time to be exposed to different environments, humidity levels and temperatures
