They were a neat little rifle. Had a shot out of one back about 86-87. Had a saddle ring. It was a 308. Always meant to get one but never did.

the oil,any oil will help.....drying out over the years will have shrunk wit hwood,allowing cracks to open. sounds like your on to it.
