    Hi I did this conversion but from a 30 cal. centerfire sup worked out really well especially using the 158 grain 38 sp lead Rn [American eagle ]

    the oil,any oil will help.....drying out over the years will have shrunk wit hwood,allowing cracks to open. sounds like your on to it.
