I’ve considered kontikis and been advised to get gps models. Have seen two other rigs badly affected by tidal drift so they tangled. I understand some models may be well inferior so do your homework....

Suggest you go to Onemana en route to Whangamata. Beach access will require a bit of a walk unless you drive right to the end of road. Sandy bottom that should produce snapper and gurnard.
