Yes for sure the hardest hitting bit once it slows down I had the same with slower kills especially on reds. I'll try find some photos tomorrow. A fallow buck I shot at 150y had a beer can entry hole...

The .270 is a good cal and can't go wrong with it running a suppressor. Imo there's no better all round caliber than the .308 for all NZ hunting, velocity isn't too high for close range bush hunting...

Barnes need to be going 3k+ ime, they start becoming a slow killer below 2,400 I reckon especially on light skinned animals.
