Well I tightened the living shit out of the drag link ends and it makes no difference; I did however count turns from centre to lock and it's 2.5 left and 2 right, so it appears that I need to adjust...

gimp The springs are not there as a working part, they are only there to take up the minimal slack between split pin positions. DO UP TILL TIGHT THEN BACK OFF TILL FIRST AVAILABLE LOCKING...

Just a tip, If we need to remove brass or bronze bushes from machines at work we just heat the bush and let it cool down. Brass and bronze will cool to a smaller size and usually just fall out....
