Barrel diameter is a bigger determinant on weight. Thinning the barrel profile is more effective.

Then it's not even a discussion imo. 300 blk is really good with subs. Lots of projectiles designed for subsonic expansion. Can't really say the same thing about 6.5 cal

I used to hunt with a 24 inch 308. Didn't find it hard but did get caught up with the crap a lot. I have a few 20 inch factory rifles and that seems like a nice compromise. My next rifle...

Might just be easier to buy a whole new howa 1500 in 6.5x55 for around the same price as a barrel. And then you get modern action strength so hotter reloads.
