As a bit of a lever gun purist, I'd say a Winchester 1894 in 30-30. Dependable, balanced, and 30-30 has knockdown power out to as far as the open sights will work for you. Suppressors and scopes...

I've met some weirdos in huts, and people in the bush who I'm pretty sure were on the run. Also had a trail cam stolen, it was at least 300m as the crow flies from a track. So I'm pretty wary now.

I think Bergara make a chassis rifle, never handled one but hear they’re reasonable.

The TL;DR version: if you're a mouth breather, stick to synthetic stocks. If you're a distinguished gent, opt for the connoisseur's choice - walnut.

Every time I take SH3 through Awakino/Mokau I see dozens of goats, without stopping the car. All along the river and up in the bluffs. Maybe have a poke around there.

I’m happy to give out goat spots, fallow spots are another question altogether though!

I’ve heard a number of hunters state that the fallow heard in the Cobb is on a knife edge, with many refusing to hunt it till it recovers. I don’t have facts to verify this, just what I’ve heard.
