Deer on the side of the road

Like anyone I drove down a country road in New Zealand and saw deer on the side of the road, perhaps it seems to be becoming more of a common sight these days......

Maybe it's a group of the farmers pet wild deer that were out for a leisurely evening stroll dining on his juicy grasses, they kindly posed for me while I took their photo's...

Perhaps this is a new way of deer farming in NZ, just using an existing 7/8 wire boundary fence....
I suppose it saves the costings of erecting deer fencing?

    No ear deer tag attached....?
Facial features of a domestic farmland / private land wild deer?
Most "genuine hunters" like the look of "genuine wild deer" with a real wild look on their face, viewers draw there own conclusions.

When I finished taking their portrait photos that they had kindly posed for me, I just gave them a wave and then I drove off.

More road side deer photos to add to my collection...

Pretty common around here. See the odd one while heading to a hunting spot to get one lol. Couple got hit by a ute a few weeks ago running across the road on the state highway.
Still, with illegal thermols doing the night shift around the region surprised the deer still around the roads

Was driving the Lindis Pass about a two months ago (early morning on the way to go hunting) and had 4 reds run right across the road in front of us. Had to slam on the anchors. Quite cool to see

Dunno about facial features but have to say non-farmed deer have a shine/gloss about them. The farmed deer(I work with) don’t have the same gloss/shine( that’s a whole ‘nother debate. I believe it’s something we could do better)

YOU EVER noticed how the dogs coat looks super shiney after a day out in scrub??? tussuck in particular makes them almost gleam...deer run in snow tussocks look fantastic. guess its a bit of a combing and any loose scragly stuff gets brushed off.

neat seeing deer anywhere,on roadside is special.

Geoff Kerr (who used to be on here I think, or was it the other forum) had a whole swag of "trophies" he'd "shot" with a camera from the main roads, like State Highways - Tahr, Reds (there was a bloody beaut stag for a road in the Kaikoura area) and Fallow . . . .

It's that time of year again, the grass will be growing spring flush etc and the deer will be out munching on it.

    Someone has been busy....

A while ago I drove down the road just like anyone else and I spied some deer skins hanging on the fence so I stopped the car and took a couple of photos. I counted 50 deer skins... Obviously there were a few deer hanging around before they were put onto the fence.

Good luck to whoever put them there, a reflection on the amount of deer that are out there.

what is the purpose, significance of putting them on the fence? I thought around my area its done by poachers as a F**k you to the farmers? or thats what i was told when there were a couple pig skins hanging at thompsons track
If you can't kill it with bullets, dont f*ck with it.

Yes I'd like to know why the skins get hung on fences.

I see a lot in my travels, I haven't found an answer, but amongst the candidates are:

A display of machismo by the hunters showing that they're good at it...

A warning to pigs and deer that if they come 'round here, this'll be what happens to them...

    I dunno

I hadn't heard of the, F' you to farmers, one....

I don't know. Personally I dont want to advertise the fact there's a few animals around at my usual hunting spots, but that's just me.
