Red face Quick AR15 Question regarding ammo.

Only been using .223 ammo in my gun. Manufacturers website says the following

" No 5.56mm NATO round will be sold nor shipped internationally with the exception of military or law enforcement purchases and only with proper documentation and approval from the State Department.
All exported rifles will be supplied in .223 Remington and will include permanently attached compensators per US State Department regulations."

The upper has .223 Calibre engraved on it.
This obviously means I cant use 5.56mm ammo in this gun or can I ?

Thanks in advance Im sure somebody will know .....

I think you can use .223 in a 5.56 but not 5.56 in a .223. Im not 100% on this.

Yea thats correct can use .223 in 5.56. 5.56 is loaded hotter. I think the remingtons and windhams are chambered for .223. NEA are 5.56

    .223 AR

I would contact STI to be sure. My 5.56 Oly Arms would eat both (.223 and 5.56) but I was warned that a .223 match chamber may cause issues with 5.56. rounds. The 5.56 chamber throat being ever so slightly different to a .223 chamber throat. But STI will know for sure what their chamber is.

The guys at sportshooter.co.nz should know-they live ARs.

    Cheers.

As mentioned, a 5.56mm chamer can shoot 5.56 and .223

Whereas a .223 chambered rifle should only shoot .223 due to higher pressure that 5.56 is loaded to and different throat length between the 2 calibres.

Re: Quick AR15 Question regarding ammo.

I distinctly remember being told that some US manufacturers stamp their 5.56 barrels as 223 to get around the export restrictions at the time.

It will shoot 223 and 556 fine
Find a REAL account of ANY failure due to 556 in a 223 AR chamber and I'll buy you a Big Murph Pie and a Coke

Spanners you must be certain of your information because that is a right out there wager if you were to lose.
It takes 43 muscle's to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger pull.

The same bolt with a HEAP of meat removed running higher than 556 pressures (thus alot more thrust) dont have issues
