Thread: What line to use for trout

What line do you use for trout fishing?
I have recently installed braid on my trout rod but it seems to tangle around the rods eyes and have mono on the kids rods but seems to like to birds nest after a couple trout.
What line would suit for each setup?

Braid is by far the best option as main line. Just make sure you spool it on correctly.

6-8lb bog std nylon...maxima USED to be the go to line...the options are endless these days. if kids are getting birds nests..either you have too much line on real or more likely,they are winding while spool is turning..DO NOT crank on handle unless are gaining line. go to high bridge and dangle line down to just above water/ground and let it unwind....if trolling behind boat....possibly need to slow down just a little bit and/or fit better swivels.

Only thing I don't use braid for is trout.
I mostly use fly gear for em, but set all my m8s up with nylon for trout 5-8 lbs, cheap and cheerful seems to go better than test stuff which stuffs up quick as well

Instinctively, I would say braid, but thinking about it, if making short casts, mono would be fine. I'd pay a bit extra for better quality line as less memory. This would be my choice in 6lb. It's allegedly fluorocarbon. I'm not 100% convinced on that, regardless, it's a good line.

I used to get the kids out on the lawn - spin rod - I would thread a piece of about half inch square jandal with a holed drilled thru it up against hook to avoid hook guide hits - then just a small lead pellet and a bit of rag - gives them lots of practice before actual river work - put out a paper plate and see how close they could cast to it - grab line pretend to be a fish gets them used to using a drag - they used to enjoy it - but they were competitive buggers

6pd mono will catch you a heap of trout.

It will also save you a heap of time untangling the kids reels

Thanks, that helps hunting and fishing spooled the braid so assume they did it correctly.
And I think the kids are winding while the fish are taking line so will try to improve that.

Not a bad thing for them to do, as it keeps the line tight imo, braid is technical compared to nylon. Start em on nylon. I went back to nylon for trout easier

when the person keeps winding,every time the bailarm goes around once without gaining line..it adds one full twist to the line..... put in fifty/sixty twists and its really easy to "throw a loop''/half hitch, around end of rod when fish is close....gets exciting if fish then takes off again.
grab a section a foot long and twist it a few times between your fingers and watch what it does when you slacken it slightly.

You can do as micky duck recommends, or use a large bucket full of water un spool into it the wind back on under tension, take your time and keep use a piece plastic pipe wrap the braid around it to create tension.

Some lures / spinners prone to turning line , veltics and blade spinners dragged against heavy current can cause your line to tension, they are best fished up stream and retrieved across the current, as even with a swivel retrieving them against the current the blade creates drag and spins the lure.

The other factor is wind which creates a belly in the line whilst casting , retrieved fast under no tension so you can get the lure swimming gives you a lot of loose line on your spool, this whipping out on the cast creates wind knots and yes tangles.

Long casts on wide water on a windy day is my nightmare
