    E-Cat Safe and Application

    Hi there-

    Your advice/comments please.

I am interested in applying for my E-cat. I have an M1 Carbine that doesn't deserve to be shot with a cut down mag and a strong interest in buying a 'proper' AR in the near future, as well as competing in MSSA shoots.

I have asked my local Arms Officer to explain the storage as I heard there were changes to be made. He said the Kilwell and Bite Security E-cat safes are the only ones they will approve. I understand there are many, many other models available in NZ including others with homemade safes.

Does this sound right to you or do I ask further questions or elsewhere?

    Regards

No, Kilwell and Bit Security are not the only ones they will approve. You can still build your own, you will just 'need' an engineers certificate to verify it is suitable.

As Police have recently attempted to review the 'requirements', here has been, as usual, lots of misinformation circulated.

This is the current Police "Guide" to Endorsed Security Arrangements.

I have a home made safe. I've had it for years. And it was owned by an endorsed dude before me. I don't have a certificate to go with it. I've never been asked for one. It always gets approved.

    Thanks guys.

I pressed him a little more and he is now going to send me the specs required for home-built safes. It seems that if you are in the know, it can be a hell of a lot cheaper- the lock being the most expensive.

Definitely build if you can. Just draw everything up first, make sure it ticks all the boxes, then send your design to the AO and make sure he thinks it does too.
