Didn't see my mention. I have found you just need to experiment. Different bullet and powder combos give wildly different results in different guns. Some numbers off the top of my head for different loads:

68gr Hornady BTHP, 26gr 2206H, ADI brass, Murom primer, 16" Colt barrel = 2864 fps

65gr SGK, ADI brass, compressed load of 2208, CCI 450, 16" Spikes = 2750ish fps. Max charge of 2206H gives mid 2650ish.

    75gr Hornady BTHP, ADI, compressed load of 2206H, CCI 450, 16" Colt = 2750fps

I struggle to get most cheap 55gr bullets over 2900fps with adventurous loads and the above barrels. Have had 53gr V max in the 3100fps territory but it shot like poo. Remember with a "fudd" stick you probably can't load as hot as I do and get away with it. Both the above Hornady loads are very accurate and fast. I have killed a few goats with the 68gr and never witnessed a more effective killing .224 bullet. Have shot exactly one deer with a .223, and it was shot in the face at about 10yds with the 65gr SGK. Predictable results. Keen to shoot something with the 75gr, by all accounts it is a savage bullet. Most interested in the new 77gr TMK bullets, when they are actually a thing on the shelves. A heavy plastic tipped bullet that fits inside an AR mag and has a G1 over .4 will take things to another level.

All those with dogs waiting no longer fear death. Those with many dogs waiting even welcome it in it's time.

I have one of those and an AR and I think the BA would stand up better than the AR + I wopuld not like to rupture a case on the AR as no gas handling

Yeah I'm happier loading hot in a bolt action than an AR15 I think? What's your theory?

Thanks Beavis. That's a bit of stuff I was after.

I might have to go have a look at what differences there are between the 75 amax and bthp.
What is a 77gr TMK (tipped match king?)
The only thing I shot with robs 223 with 75gr amax was a rabbit at 150m. It was umm quite dramatic, head was 3m of hill and the ground was painted red

I shot a couple of goats at like zero meters with the 75gr BTHP at 2350 fps and was not impressed

My theory is that a 5.56 AR will run safely at higher pressure than a SAAMI spec rifle by default. I'm certain an AR will catastrophically fail due to a hot load before a bolt gun will, but if the AR is designed to run higher pressure loads off the bat... Proper mil spec guns are proofed with a 70k psi load. Ramshot manual lists 5.56 loads running in the 60k psi range versus 55k for a normal .223.

But eg a remington 700 comes chambered in say 7mm rem mag as well as .223 with a 65k psi operating pressure and a larger case head so more force overall on the same size lugs etc

Pressure specs can be a bit meaningless?
    veitnamcam and Jt89 like this.

Sort of, it really comes down to the rifle. I don't think you would have much worse than a sticky bolt, maybe a blown primer running warm 5.56 loads. What I meant was you may run into those issues with bolt gun if trying to hot rod it like I do. But those loads above are out of the book anyway.
