I also run 63gr Sierra semi’s in my old A1 Sako. Nothing with four legs likes them. Just got some Speer Gold Dot 62’s to give a whirl, they get some encouraging write up’s
    Cheers MG

Ive used JBM ballistics for ages for trajectory but never noticed until today this Table of Projectile Lengths.

My current batch of Speer 70grain are about .780" where this shows .808", I think Speer have tweaked the profile a little, I noticed this when setting the jump to rifling.

    https://jbmballistics.com/ballistics...hs.shtml#Speer

I guess that if you have to substitue a projectile with the same weight, you can use the same or shorter it should still stabilise in YOUR rifle.

OK its crappy day and I have nothing better to do with my time.

The 63gr Sierra was the cousin for the 64gr PMC. Both very good pills. The 63gr superceded by the 65gr GMK. The 63gr gets very little mention or support form Sierra. Strange company but reflective of the machinations that besets changed ownership.

So your Baikal can stabilise these 70 grainers okay then?

The 70 grain Speers were designed to stablise in 1:14 twist barrels. I have used them in 14 twist Sako .222, BSA .222, 14 twist .22-250, and 1:12 twist .223, and they shoot very well in all of them.
It's the original .22 cal deer bullet.

    Greetings @JohnDuxbury,
Using some rules published by John Barsness a few years back and net case capacities from the Nosler site you should be able to get to about 100 fps less than the .223 in the .222 all else being equal. My old Speer No 9 manual data with both shot in bolt actions seems to support this.
    Regards Grandpamac.

Interesting thread. Given all the hype of faster twist barrels to run the heavier projectiles in the 223’s, I thought I was limited up to 55gn and maybe up to 60 in all my 22cals as they are all 1:14 (222 & 22-250) and 1:12 in the Tikka 223. Having read some of the 222 threads on here, this seems not to be the case. Cleaning up some 222/223 cases to start load development now and it looks like, with the right bullets, I can expand my horizons later if I want to.

The Speer 70s are only $45/100 at DeltaMikes which I thought was very reasonable. Thanks for the feedback.

The 60 grain Hornady is a good bullet too, and will shoot in a .222. I have some 63g Sierra loaded up but have not shot a deer with one as yet.

Just to check I'm following you guys, DeltaMike has these "varmint rounds" and they're "designed for 1:10 or faster"...so is this the right one or am I offtrack here?

Thanks @Micky Duck. I went to the Speer site and it doesn't say anything about 1:10 or faster, so maybe that's an error on DeltaMikes site?
