Thanks for all the info @Oldbloke.
I have found reference to "Nobel Parabellum Powder" in this government document from 1959 https://www.nzlii.org/nz/legis/num_reg/eao1959348.pdf.
Then there's also a reference to "Parabellum Powder" in this one from 1994 https://www.legislation.govt.nz/regu...DLM185419.html.
Perhaps it simply went by Parabellum Powder at the time?
It weighs 2.1kg in the tin so probably close to 2kg of powder. If, and it's looking like a big if, I can find a way to make use of it safely then it would be good to use it up.

Page 9 in here lists 9mm Luger loads for Nobel pistol powders 2 and 3 https://forum.castbulletassoc.org/fi...-af700076265e/
I wonder how likely it is that one of these was the successor of the Parabellum Powder.

If you a keen to give that powder a go, find a 9mm load for a powder like bullseye, load a grain under and see what happens. If you a sure the old boy was loading it in 9mm should be fine,
Easy for me to say I know, it's not me taking any risk.

Unfortunately not. He said he thinks he used 4 grains with 124 grain projectiles but it was that long ago he couldn't say for sure.

This page holds a little more info https://sites.google.com/site/britmi...arabellum-ball

"The bullet weighed 115 grains... The propellant charge was 6 grains of Du pont SR.4898, later changed to Nobel's parabellum Powder."
"Velocity of early production was 1,250 fps at 60 feet but in 1944 this was increased to 1,300 fps at 60 feet"

Knowing the velocity of a given projectile weight in theory if the barrel length was known it may be possible to reverse engineer the powder charge?

Yep, tend to agree. But do the burn test first and compare it to a fast powder.
    I'd try abt 2.5 or 3 grains.

Now if you know someone with a 9mm insert for shotgun.you could load what you think is right...your ol mates 4grns and fire a couple through insert over chronicgraph...then do same with factory loaded 9 mm or a known load and compare velocity and cases themselves afterwards...by shooting through insert it's in stronger gun and possibly a bit safer.

I have such an insert and it's marvelous. However back on subject, this is probably what the original tins looked like

Those tins were about when my big brother started reloading in the late 60's, I have a similar age IMR tin with $14.50 written on it(for a lb)
