    Factory ammo chrony results

    Hi
I had a chance yesterday to run some factory ammo over the chronograph results as follows.
    Sauer 100 7mm08 16.5inch barrel

    Federal power shock blue 150gn
    2401,2428,2400,2431,2415

    Remington corelokt 140gn
    2370,2465,2465,2588,2531

    Hornaday superformance 139 sat
    2501, 2572,2602,2613,2651,2609

Now I don't have much experience with these things but that is quite a large differences with the same ammo

I shot each string with 10 minutes to let the barrel cool in between also had a small rest every 3 or so shots while I checked the groups.

I've decided to use the hornaday even though the Remington grouped better because the calculator says the higher bc and mv will allow me to shoot 200 yards further and retain energy.

Bit of an eye opener aye, the factory velocities are often inconsistent and always overstated.

In the Hornady add it says :
'Increase your rifle's performance up to 200 fps without extra chamber pressure, recoil, muzzle blast, temperature sensitivity, fouling, or loss of accuracy'.
It does NOT allow you to shoot 200yards further.
With a short barrel you are pushing the limits with a 400yards shot and using factory ammunition.
But most shots are within 100yards anyway.
If the Hornady ammunition doesn't shoot within 1" @ 100yds you have to consider where the projectile hits at 400yds, which could be a miss or bad shot.
Or you can stay within 300 yards and keep life a lot simpler.

They normally state the barrel length it was tested with - often its 26inch
Of course altitude and pressure, temp etc have a effect too

If you enter the average 2600fps into the ballistics calculator it says that it will retain 1000ftlb of energy out to 500meters

You either use Standard or Metric.
When you put 2600fps in, and your calculator says you retain 1000ftlb the distance shown is Yards not Meters.

I should use the refresher button
I just see your last reply.
Or you can stay within 300 yards and keep life a lot simpler.

I know the difference between metric and imperial just a mistake writing the post and the hornaday app will allow to receive information in meters even if you input fps

    G'day,

Have you thought about a lighter pill? Perhaps another federal offering seeing as they had the least variance?
The federals were obviously the slowest and heaviest but more importantly had the smallest standard deviation.

If your looking to stretch you rifles legs there are a few key things to be looking for/doing IMO.... 1. Obviously accuracy. 2. Velocity Standard deviation. 3 verifying dope. 4. Identify Max effective range to be pretty darn sure your gonna put a beast down. 5. More practice than I manage. (Missed a few additional learning g the lessons)

In saying all the a 16.5 inch 708 sound like the making of a fun, light, little bush gun!!

Yeah federal do a fusion 120gn that has some good reviews.
It's a expensive business buying a box of everything trying to find out what a rifle wants

Hornady sp ammo is going faster than standard. So from his results a 139 sst going 2600 will have enough energy to do the job to 450 yards if you go with the fact you need at least 1000 ftlb.
If you used another projectile(same) in the same weight but was going 200fps slower, ie 2400fps then to get the same results in energy it will only be 350yards for the min 1000ftlb so the extra speed is giving you more energy at distance and in this case extends the range by 100 yards.
All test barrels are normally 24 inch, if the 139sst were going the 2950fps as stated you have plenty of energy to do the job past 500 yards

Once you’ve got some brass, go down the reload path with a friendly reloader. You won’t look back.

After using factory loads in my rifle for years, the improvement in accuracy with hand loads, was just phenomenal. Clover leaf at 100m. I’ve never achieved it before. Very very happy!
