Flat base or boat tail for 18inch barrel

    Hi guys

I have acquired some .270 dies so I am going to make some reloads for my 1980’s Winchester model 70 xtr featherweight. Great rifle.
I have only shot factory ammo with this rifle thus far, getting 2inch groups at 100m with 130gr corelokt. This has been fine for in the bush, hoping to get it a bit tighter.
Before I buy some projectiles I was hoping to get some opinions and suggestions as to what would be a good start, I understand this is probably a case of trail and error. But always good to seek wise council. I was thinking Hornady interlocks 130gr thanks

prepare to be flooded with opinions and debates!
More seriously, got some good guidance from the good buggers on here, what's your twist rate?

Won't matter in that rifle.will be 1:10 twist. You will be able to seat to mag length as they long throated ...and handle rather warm loads. Interlicts worked well in mine but for goats the Speer might be more explosive. The 100-110grn options might also be worth a look depending on range you intending to use them at. I had featherweight for fourty years.

Took the words right out of my mouth. It doesn't matter.

And @whanahuia is on the button too.

So I suspect with an 18 inch barrel, you might get a touch more speed out of flat base projectiles. But if you want value for money, check out Ammo directs prices on Speer boat tails. As for the projectiles performance. It works as well as an ELDX at the ranges I shoot.

Go speer and flat base there's no advantage to be had with a boat tail unless your out over 400 yds or 360 metres whichever is the closest but they're a little easier to reload with than flat base because of that little taper

Identify what you want to do, and then select a bullet that will best achieve that.

Awesome thanks for the info, I’ll take a look into the Speer projectiles, I seen guncity is doing interlocks for $79 right now not a bad price either. I’ll be loading them up with ar2209. Looking forward to finding a recipe that works then will test it out on a few goats to get the final consensus

Wow those are great prices, I haven't had any experience with the hot Cors before, how do they compare to the interlocks? Cheers

Your corelokt, Interlocks and Hot Cars are going to all perform similar. The Boattail will be more frangible. But I have been impressed with them since I started using them in my current rifle. Here's a few animals that have fallen too them, particularly the big boars have all been shot through heavy bone and shield, and they worked very well.

They went well in my win mod 70 . They are super soft accurate and rather explody. And yes gimp...cheap cheap cheap. Cheap is good.
