Thread: friends asking how much for load development

Had the same mate. Ive hosted reloading class - entry to advanced level. Some die hard supporters will appreciate it, but for most reloading is as boring as watching paint dry.

I charge $1250 for load development - which is way to little - especially if I have to travel 4 times to Kaitoke(4.5hr of driving - thats not even including time spend shooting and cleaning.)

I was thinking - I could host some reloading classes again..

I seem to recall you need some sort of licence if reloading and selling professionally which effectively you are if charging for the service, as apposed to just selling some ammo. Yeah, I know, no one will find out wink wink. But people talk "oh yeah so and so loads for me". And it's also something I wouldn't want the taxman coming visiting about.

The needing a licence I tried to find but gave up as I too have given up "helping" it's not worth the hassle for virtually zilch return.

I avoid doing it now but if I have to I keep it to getting meat and beer in return. No money. And the mate gets to attend the range sessions. Mine have generally been mates starting out and an outcome of the exercise is they are set up to continue doing it themselves.

your mate buys the components...and comes and does the reloading under your supervision on your gear....works the best for me.its a pain in the arse having little bits of others components in the cupboard with my own...you buy it and keep it and bring it with you works far better.

and here was I being nice and polite for once.....after seeing 6.c cm comment on heart attack...I COULD have said...if I had to pay for enough components for dannyb to do a load develpment for me...my wallet would be protesting before he was done and I would possibly be having heart failure at how much and how long it was taking........ but Im honest enough to know it would be money well spent,and the end result would be perfect in every possible way..far to good for a heathen bush hobbit like me!!!!!

That section applies to selling existing ammunition

Doing load development you will be providing a service and you will need a dealers license

Sorry just my take on providing a product or service.

I load for a couple of good mates. They cover their equipment and components costs but as good friends I do the loading on me. They come lend a hand when they can and I show them how to do parts of the process. I limit it to only good friends for the time reason though and they return the favour when the day comes as good mates do. I’ve had others offer to pay for me to reload but the time I need to get to the range which isn’t close by just isn’t worth it for me amongst other life stuff atm.

If I changed for the loading I do I could buy another Sako.
They either supply their own components and I just load or I charge them for what I use last lot was .260 rounds loaded with ELDX cost was $2.12 per round excluding brass.
I don't charge for time, same for load development I'm usually going to the range down the road quite often so it's no biggie.
Alot of the time they tag along and learn the process.

If your selling the person the rounds you made then you need dealer licence. if you load ammo for a load development shoot it all your self and just supply him the data and components for him to load his own, then no issses. just dont supply loaded rounds.

FYI In terms of the legal requirements of charging customers money, its surprisingly easy to register a company and be self employed. Keeping your invoices for the year and doing a tax return on small business is not difficult, and you can write off your reloading equipment as expenses or depreciating assets depending on value threshold.
