I've sort of growen out of this now but the photo still impresses me........
22-243 case full to the brim of reloader 15 and a 30 grain berger
This proved to be utter useless on rabbits but it did tear the rifling out of the barrel

That impressive:cool:
Shit thats fast.
I like it!
22-243 is somthing I like for that reason and would build one if it not for the fact I'd need to buy a barrel making business to run it
I got over 1500 rounds through an old 22-243 before it started to open up, barrels are cheap. I'm onto my 5th rifle with this chambering.......
At that speed I bet you didnt!!
no, that rifle was on its way for a new barrel a few days later...... The first one I got was pushing 55g ballistic tips at 3900fps, I got it second hand with about 800 rounds through it, it was a grunig barrel.
Have you tried any heavier pills in your 22-243? I'm using 80 targex's @ just under 3500fps in mine but haven't tried anything lighter yet.
I've have vairous twist rates over the years, 1:12, 1:14, 1:8, 1:7 and back to 1:14 now. I only use it to shoot rabbits to 400 meters max and have only used 55g Ballistic tips. Except for the 1:7 twist that now kiwi greg owns which I build to shoot 90g bergers at about 3200fps I've had no need to change.
I got a few FPS faster with my slow twist 22-243, 30 bergers & 2207 but was blowing primers, got them cruising at 5000 but never shot any thing with them.
I have the 1-7 mentioned above, it is bloody awsome, 90s at 3100, I can get 3400 but they don't get to where they are supposed to far too other :pissed off:
It is very consistant & will normally hit the steel 1st shot out to 1100.
The best I have done with it is bunnies at 900 yards, got one the other week 1st shot at 646 :killzonesmiley:
I'm tempted to get another Kimber 22-250 & get Robbie to rechamber it for the liitle pills real fast, I might grow up one day.........Nah probably a Tui add :yaeh am not durnk:
I brought a HUGE bag of once fire 22-250 brass before I fly out.... I got dies too somewhere - now just need a gun lol
It will be back from Robbies tomorrow, in time for some testing in the weekend if I'm not busy......probably will be.....bugger...will have to make time
Be careful , with running AI reamers into std chamberings already machined in the barrel , as one gunsmith said its something hes asked alot to do , but something he him self will never do , as he feels as the front of the reamer is initially unsupported/guided that the chamber does not cut true , as the edge ( at the back of the case starts cutting before pliot has any guidance or alignment ) .
He feels the chamber does not get cut straight ,
Well I finally had a chance to have a play with my new 22-243, just to prove I haven't grown up either, hope I never do !!
It is a Kimber Longmaster VT 22-250 unfired, I sent it to Robbie @ Gunworks Canterbury to put his 22-243 reamer into it, he did a Kimber Provarmint for me years ago, unfired as well.
They have a 1-14 twist like most 22-250s so only really any good for the lighter pills
The VT has a 26" barrel & is looking like it will push the 53 Vmaxs a little quicker than my old one would have.
The 53 Vmax is quite new & has a high BC, .290 according to Hornady, I will check it soonish.
It looks like I will be able to push them @ 4050-4075 ish fps, I can go faster but it is a bit hard on brass....:ouch...it hurts:
But this post is about speed so here it is 30 grain Bergers at silly speeds

Thats probably enough pics, good times
Looks like you win this round:burnt:
Did you go out onto the range and pick up your rifling afterwards?
Could someone give me the low down on building a 22-243. If I had a stock standard 243 T3. Do I just need to get a fast twist barrel fitted i.e without any other chamber modification. Want to shoot 62gr Barnes. Dont want a long barrel and plan to put a suppressor on it. Cheers.
Its just such an efficient round.
Love it. Whats a 223 sling 53's at, like 3000 fps?
Chris
My 223 test rigs put the 53vmax out at 3550-3600 ish & the 75-80 Amax out at 2950-3000 ish.
My 22 Terminator should put them out faster
Still waiting on reamers.........& waiting........& waiting......:oh noes: I hate waiting........:pissed off:
That is why I do plenty R&D, to get deffinative results on improvements :) it costs plenty of $$$ & time though to do it properly.......
Haha, so maybe it isn't as efficient as I thought.
80% more powder for 10% more velocity. Its definitely far more efficient in the heavier pills though.
I suppose 8:1 is the normal ratio.
Chris
Why bother when the .243 exists?
None. I use my 243 a lot ("go to" is the expression I think), but I do like to tinker. Have always been interested in and used the 223 and 22.250 a lot on deer and would like to see what difference 500 extra fps and 10 grn of bullet would make. Only one way to find out, and to satisfy the itch :D
My fast twist, 1-7 ex Crzyman 22-243 chucks the 90 Bergers out at a leisurely 3100 can go to 3200+ but haven't bothered.
The BC is .552 & it is very accurate, I have shot it out to 1300 but it is very hard to hear it "gong" it's more like "ping".
It is my goto over 500 yard bunnie gun
I prefer my 204, 40 Vmax for the sub 500 ones, much more efficent use of resources :)
You'll necer get 500fps over the .22-250 with the .22/243 if they're loaded to the same pressure. Very little practical difference in perfornance in my opinion for 10+gr more powder and correspondingly less barrel life as well as the hassles of a wildcat (which are admittedly minor with .22/243 compared to some others)
At the end of the day, a cartridge is there to throw a bit of lead and copper through the air, and I'm all for sticking to the simplest and most efficient ways to achieve the goal of moving that bit of lead and copper of whatever size, weight and shape I prefer at the speed neccesary to do what I want it to do
what does the 22-243 get speed wise with a 75gr amax?
22-250AI is what I load for a mates bunny gun
AI was to stop the case disapearing down the barrel, got sick of triming them.
It gets 3400 fps with a sane load that the brass shows no sign of preasure....and with std old 2209 (easy to get)
I Run the 243AI but do very little varmit shooting ATM.....so plenty of barrel life left :P works a treat on goats with the 87gr Vmax..... messy
I've never had to trim a case, never changed a barrel because it it was at the end of its life and there is nothing to do to the brass other than running it through a neck die before loading.
It's a great round and different. The same reason people AI cases, to be different and gain a little. I couldnt be bothered with a AI case and fireforming.
Who cases that it burns 10g more powder than a 250, thats only a reason for people to complain because they are tight arses, no other reason behind it. If you cant afford powder I think you need to take up knitting.
When I got my first one there were only a hand full around, now there are several and everyone that has one or used one loves it. Its only the people that dont have one that look for reasons why its no good.
haha wool.
I had the numbers all fubared in my head, thought it was 1000 fps faster for the amax's. I retract my previous statement.
If any of you who haven't seen greg's 1:7 twist shoot those bergers, its understandable you would wonder why.
But its fucking amazing. It has been built properly, but even so, the way it hits the small gongs way past 1000m is hard to believe. A very cool rifle which ONLY downside is the barrel life, everything else is perfect. Low recoil, flat shooting, super accurate, east to load for (im told), cheap brass, cheap powder, cheap pills etc etc etc
Chris
