    Virgin

Hi I am a new member to NZHS, and I am new to any form of hunting. And I only recieved my firearms licence a few weeks ago
(as the title indicates "virgin"). I am finding the whole where I can shoot, and when I can shoot a little frustrating.
I bought a .22 a week ago (I thought I would start small) and just need somewhere for me and my 2 girls to law fully try it out.
I rang a whey company near me (Cambridge) and asked if I could go on their lease block, The guy on the phone sounded keen but he had just put cattle on their. Any ideas?

Welcome aboard Thaiboxer. You are a brave man starting a thread with that title on a forum with so many reprobates. Good luck finding a private property to bop some bunnies on and be careful around your youngun's. Also just in case you are not aware, as a general rule you should take the .22 into DoC areas.

Hi 'thaiboxer'. Welcome from the Coromandel. 'rushy is going to come back and change that statement on the use of .22 on Doc land.

Ooops yes thanks Graeme. Sorry Thaiboxer missing the word NOT from what I said. You should NOT take a .22 onto DoC controlled land. Yet another example of Allan setting a low standard and failing to achieve it!

May pay to take the rifle to a range first to make sure it is sighted in properly and take some different brands off ammo to find what is the most accurate out of your rifle, You can use the taupo range down mountain road off the napier taupo highway for a $2 honesty box donation. What brand iof .22 did you get as we may be able to give you a good idea of what ammo will shoot best in it, also before I forget welcome aboard.

wow! what a result! I have never been on a forum before and I am well impressed by the feed back and your generosity with the knowledge. Sorry, my initial post sounds like I have never fired a weapon before, I used to shoot a shotgun (with my father) and Handguns (before they were restricted in the U.K, sorry forgot to mention I am english). And may I just say how pleased I am with you guys mentioning handling skills and being safe around children. Gives me confidence that this forum interwebby thing is something very worthwhile, thank you all so much. The rifle I purchased was a Norinco JW15. Why are 22's not allowed on DOC land by the way?

.22LR is not allowed on DOC land as it can be used to take wood pigeons which are protected and then there would be the odd twat who would try and use a rimfire to shoot a deer and potentialy screw up the shot resulting in maimed animals. The JW15's like Aguila ammo look for mexican made fiocchi it is made in the aguila factory and the original is coming back on the market soon there are other brands they shoot well on but can not remember them all.

Join a club, meet people and get the opportunity to shoot at the local range. Chances are you'll end up bumping into someone who knows someone and before long you'll be knocking over those pesky rabbits and possums.

There's a Hamilton NZDA indoor range, as well as Tokoroa outdoor range. Plus there's nzrimfire.com which is a nifty rimfire forum to belong to.

The JW15s are great rifles. Iv had one for a 15 years (shit Im old).

Just door knock. Drive out into the country, find a likely looking area, go to the house, knock on the door and explain that your looking for a place to look for a few rabbits with your daughters. Ask politely if you could shoot on their property. If they say no, thank them for their time, and ask them if there was anyone else they knew of worth asking. Take your daughters with you, I garuntee, no-one will turn you away.

Always call first, preferably a couple of days in advance. Polite people who leave gates as the found them are usually not turned away in my experience, especially with children in tow. Down home (SI) there are miles of river bed people can go and shoot. Not sure about up your way.
+1. No different to UK mate, its all about who you know, if you know nobody just start door knocking. Maybe ask friends here / work mates if they know any local farmers who might let you on their land, zero and target practice with the .22 just to get used to it.Also helps if the farmers know once you are happy with it you may knock over some rabbits for them.

Hahaha this should be fun, remember we ARE allowed firearms here! If you've ever wanted to own a semi auto you can!
nothing more fun than loading up a mag and making fruit salad in just seconds!

one last thing, you can be as UN PC as you want around here so go for it!
Welcome to lil old NZ, any questions just ask and you WILL become enlightened!
