Question Any Hunting Firefighters on this Forum?

Hi all, my name is Jake. I'm a firefighter based in Oregon in the US and I'm currently planning my first venture into out of country hunting in 2024. If there are any NZ firefighters/hunters out there, I was hoping to maybe make a good contact for when I do make it out to hunt there. A little bit about myself, I'm a passionate elk hunter and I spend all of September during our elk rut out in the mountains of Oregon. All the hunting I do is DIY and generally backcountry, backpack style hunts on public land. A trip to New Zealand has always been a dream of mine and I plan on hunting in the same style. I'm not interested in pay to hunt or guided hunting, and I plan spending a month traveling around your country and putting lots of miles on the boots. I'm neck deep in the planning stage of this trip and I'd love to be able to chat with someone with some experience and local knowledge about the NZ hunting program and the logistics aspects of the trip. I know chances are slim of any of you traveling to the US Pacific Northwest, but if you do, I'd be more than happy to share my local hunting knowledge or take you salmon fishing.
Thanks in advance. I'm looking forward to exploring your awesome country,
    Jake

Epic bro, Love watching the ELK hunting in your neck of the woods.

When you get more of an idea of where you're going to be people can definitely help with some general knowledge of areas.

post up some of your hunts in the stories section

You'll find all of our hunting on public land on the above website....
It's easy to find out all sorts of stuff by general location or game species, access / permits / places to stay etc...
Also has pretty decent topo maps / satellite maps to look over.

Keep checking in, there are a couple of Hunting Firefighters amongst the members.
Real gentlemen they are too, and I'm confident they'll be in touch with you when they see your post

Thanks everone! I’ve been going over the DOC website for the last few weeks and I’ve found quite a few helpful tools. I’ve got the Topo50 app as well. My general plan is flying into Christchurch and renting a car. From there, I’ll be open to exploring anything within a couple days of driving. I’m used to long drives, sleeping in the car and covering lots of ground at home. And I’ll be sure to post up some stories from the elk woods.

Hey mate. If you end up in Canterbury in the South Island hit me up. Several of my hunting mates are Firemen. All good lads and solid boys to mission with

    Hey Jake

    Yep I’m a Firefighter.

Flick me a PM, unfortunately I’m based in the North Island but went to University in Christchurch so certainly can assist you in some way.

Like the others said, post a story or two about your hunting in the US and you’ll get all the help you need.

Plently of smoke up here in Canada right now I bumped into some American jumpers in MacKenzie BC yesterday, once again a great bunch of folks.

PM’s are coming boys, I need a few more posts before I can send messages. Thanks to everyone that has reached out. I’ll be posting up a story about rattling in mountain whitetails in Idaho later today.
