I had some time this weekend, and with plenty of meat in the freezer wanted to scout out a new area. The recent snow and rain would make any tops hunting or river crossing to much of a challenge for me with only a weekend to work with so decided to scout out a valley in Arthurs Pass.
I didn't expect there to be high numbers, given is a valley floor in winter and I had heard that area has had a decent amount of 1080 in past years. But I was a bit shocked that over 10km of travel I did not see a single deer sign. Not one. I saw a rabbit and maybe three birds and a dead rat in a trap near the valley mouth. I've never been in a valley that quiet. Crazy what 1080 can do to a place. Looking at the DOC 1080 map it doesn't show any drops in that valley for the past few years, so I imagine years before that they must have hammered it.
Lovely walk though.
