    Chew tobacco Stewart island

Anyone out there have a bit of info on this block ? Have been invited on a trip late January and never been before to the island . Mate that booked it hasn’t been to this block before , so would be bloody spot on for some general info or some ideas on what to take with us . Cheers in advance.

Hire a dinghy off the charter operator as it opens up a lot of your block and of course the fishing. Chewy usually has good deer numbers, and kiwis and sea lions. Watch the beaches first and last light for deer. Most of the block has hunter tracks running any which way and the odd old deer exclosure plots. Watch the weather if out an about in the boat as it can get very rough along the coast and pull dinghy up above high tide when not using it. Theres a few YouTube vids on that area. Yes to sandflys and mozzies that time of year. Good hut there and endless fly camping spots. Its a neat block and one of my favourites. Good hunting.

It’s a great block. Have a look at the Hunters Club TV episode they did there as that's Chew Tabacco block and will give you a good feel for what to expect.

Some of the best bush hunting on that block is not far from the hut so you don’t have to be in a rush to get to the far end. If you want to sit and watch then this is a good spot – I saw a lot of deer just sitting here. There is one standing on the beach in this photo.

It also pays to have a rifle handy at all times. I knocked this one over on the old campsite clearing (quite literally 100m away from the hut) while walking down the beach with a coffee one morning.

Chew tobacco?? I thought you may find some good tobacco down there since all the NZ ones are tasteless, pretty much like smoking leafs from tree or grass.

Yeah, you'll get it as you cross the ridge to the far beach. What dates have you got as well be in there again around then and might be able to coordinate transport. Hopefully we are there before you though lol

make contact with the gangs you will get the good grass - east coast buds mate - no the name is likely many many years old and may date back to over 100 -150 years ago and the early sealers or whalers - some cleaver bugger on here will know

Chew Tobacco Bay …… An early resident here had a growth in his cheek that looked as if he was chewing a quid of tobacco ( from Google )
