    Decent Bug Repellant?

With summer coming and the inevitable bugs and sandflies etc etc, anyone know a decent repellant to throw in the pack?
I have tried a few, even the old home made recipes, not much seemed to work. Some seemed to attract the bastards!
I am a sandfly magnet and get the after effects worse than anyone else in the family or than mates do.

Vegemite. Eat it rather than smear it on yourself. That would just be silly
It takes 43 muscle's to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger pull.
What more do we need? If we are above ground and breathing the rest is up to us!

Vegemite. mmmmm perfume of the Gods. Just imagine the woman of your dreams smeared in Vegemite........I hear it is a fetish in Hobart.
Yes the vitamon B bit is suposed to help with bugs, but I have tried those 500mg Beroccas and the little buggers still attacked me.
The Dettol and baby oil (dont forget a splash of metho for emulsifyer) worked well for me by drowning them as they hit my skin, thanks anyway Pengy.
Wasnt there something on the shelves full of DDT that worked well? Wasnt "Rid" though. Rid worked in Aussie (where it's made) but was no good to me here unfortunately.

Bushman. If it works in Fiordland, it will work anywhere. A bit oily. Got a rash under my watch strap but from memory, the instructions say not to get near plastics

    Agree with this.
There is a couple of strengths though, get the high DEET one. Just don't touch anything plastic (including glasses lens and some shirts) as it kind of makes them go all sticky and get holes in the shirts.... The bugs don't like it either
(used west coast nz to west Africa, and while not 100% bite free, bugger all got through - and no, I don't work for them!

    Bushman Red top. 80% deet.
Best stuff I have used but it stinks for ages and has ether in it, which melts plastic and rubber.
No good for fishermen if they get to much on their hands

Agree about Bushmans definitely high deet content. Also pack anthisan, it is anti itch cream and helps if the wee buggers get through. Also an antihistamine tablet helps keep the itch at bay. Im like you bugs love the blood, damn foreigners
