I'd reccomend taking a drive and knocking on some doors, talking to the locals. The area is getting worse and worse for private land owners not allowing access to the national park alongside everyone who "has been hunting there for 10-15 years" and wants to protect their interests. It's a big area, heaps of deer just about meeting the right person to get the ball rolling.

The forks hut area is not that big Diggers is easy access off the Takaparai road.
There is a few groups of regular hunters that have been hunting forks for years and the landowner feels there is enough hunters going in there as well as they are a hunting family which is why they don't give out their number.
