Technically leaving a firearm, unattended, in a motel room breaks the law.
Leaving a firearm in a locked case, case locked to the vehicle, for more than 60 minutes breaks the law.

Those of use who travel have probably done (and may still do) both of these actions. That doesn't make them legal.

As I read the law if you go out for dinner you're meant to take your locked rifle case into the restaurant with you if you're going to be there for more than 60 minutes. The law is stupid, I think we can agree with that.

I take my bolts in a backpack into the restaurant with rifles locked in vehicle.
I can return to vehicle every 55 minutes thereby ensuring that the 60 minute limit is not broken.
Stupid but it is compliant with the law.

Yep, the law leaves you with a Catch 22 situation on these occasions.

I suspect there’s a fair few doing the ‘leave the gun locked in the car but take the bolt with me’ however those with shotguns and lever actions etc don’t have that option so what to do?

So , just to extend the legal dumbfuckery further - what do you all do to secure your firearm when you are in a hut or a tent?

It's in your possession/in use so not required to be stored.

In ops situation I'd be looking to lock the rifle in a hardcase and lock the hard case to something in the accomo rather than leave it in the vehicle. Vehicle break ins are way to common.

Take the bolt skiing. Bit of a don't ask don't tell situation.

Having talked to Police officers (including some of the new authority staff) on a number of these issues I have observed an unofficial but consistent message of pragmatism.
There is a wide acknowledgement the law doesn't cover all potential scenarios and we are encouraged to act security minded and pragmatic. This won't save you if you are found to be in breach and an officer/prosecutor takes exception but I consider a thoughtful and pragmatic firearms licence holder will in general be given the benefit of the doubt.

I also believe the evidence of this is the rarity of benign but nevertheless illegal events being prosecuted. There have been a few but not enough to point to active targeting of minor misalignment with Arms legislation. In most cases I have heard of the police have taken an educative approach and informed individuals of their requirements.

Act responsibly, do what is practicable to secure your firearms, take vital parts with you, and I think you'll be fine.

Section 3.1.6 of this guidance does provide some assistance but still doesn't cover/allow for when you might be absent from temporary accommodation: https://www.firearmssafetyauthority....e-guidance.pdf

I got a couple of lock cables made up at Cooke's in Invercargill, and was told they made a fair few cables up after Doc and the local police had been boating a few of the huts on Stewart Island checking for unsecured firearms

Essentially the new firearms storage legislation has made it impossible to go on a hunting trip and adhere to the storage requirements.
If you stay in a back country hut, friends place, motel or whatever situation you need to stay in means that storage of firearms won't follow the legislation.

It's possible this could be used against us if they want to make things difficult.
Maybe there is an need for portable vehicle firearm safes that are somehow fixed to the vehicle to overcome this issue??

Doesn't matter. The Arms Act doesn't apply to them.

Under section 3.1.6 for overnight storage it states that arrangements must be made for secure storage when away from the usual facility.
A back country hut is a public place but has no secure storage.
My point is that it can be determined that laws are broken even though it's not practical to find security.
