    Goat Hunting

Hello Everyone, I am a new hunter originally from Nepal but located in Christchurch.
I am wanting to shoot some goats, so just wondering if any of would suggest me any places .
So far I have only been to wharekiri stream and George stream in kaikoura .
    Your help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

They are probably the best places to go close to Christchurch. Otherwise try some places on the West Coast. The DOC website will give you some ideas of what to go.

Surely someone knows a spot with heaps of goats (which they didn't shoot, thus allowing them to plague the hills). Come on - this guy is keen!

This is south island...we simply do NOT have big numbers of goats on East coast anywhere near the centre of island...honest ,they just ate not here. I've seen eggzachary two in last ten years....and look as would like to shoot a few for workmate... Stuff has confirmed the OP is in right spots. Utube suggests that Kaikoura area is best bet....

Yea sorry to say Micky Duck is bang on!
If I could find goats near Christchurch there would be still no goats because we all need practice…
I drive to the west coast for goats, to much bush to shoot them all so plenty in small numbers on doc land.
It would almost be easier to get into nanny tahr from Christchurch.

Interesting comments about goat numbers in the southisland. I have lived in Marlborough for 30 years and my experience is vastly different to those stated. Most valleys across the richmond ranges and South Marlborough hold high numbers of goats. Sorry can't help with Christchurch but anywhere around Marlborough and Kaikoura hold numbers of goats. As said jump on maps and doc website and look at the valleys.

Marlborough for sure. Got 24 without trying too hard over three outings in Tory Channel 10 days ago - from prob 40-50 seen. Would have added another 10-15 if I had my own rifle with 10 shot mag. Would be worth the drive from Chch to get a couple of days on public land up there - just follow your nose, and ears.

People shoot as many goats as they can, then complain that there aren't any to shoot!

I'm running a project in my area where if there are 2 goats and 1 is white, I'll shoot the other one. Eventually they'll be easier to find.

Oaro River is worth a look up by Kaikoura. About an hour walk along the river through private land to start. Once you hit public land, there are always goats either on river bed or walking along the steep faces either side. Shot a couple at about 5m the other day, went well in the slow cooker.
