    Technically there's none.

    If one was to operate as a guide in a business sense a detailed health and safety policy would be needed, and if guiding on public land a concession with DoC would be needed.

    Some operators become accredited by the NZ Professional Guiding Association. They run a fairly good course, and provide a certificate upon completion. And you get a concession through them to guide on public land.

    I am surprised it is not more regulated.
