Same going on in the mountains in the Marlborough area, commercial guys hammering it. We saw them shooting, very close to us. Heard the machine going all morning for several mornings. Essentially no stags in our area, no shortage of hinds.

I you read my earlier posting from just after the roar this year you will understand what happened. It wasn't the local guys shooting in the blocks just before and on 1st period fly in day - it was a machine from Westport, they were using a ground hunter also and were seen by many. Not the first year they have done it.

Interesting how the Hunters Club guys have got one of, if not the most sort after blocks two years running - 1st period then 2nd the following year.

Gotta have a bit of luck once in a while. Wapiti Ballot hasn't been quite as kind to us, although we have done pretty well with getting Tahr blocks. We tend to put in a lot of ballots, for Wanaka blocks as well (haven't pulled one of those for the past four years). Helps having a wider network of potential hunters to film, as there are currently 6 of us within our little 'club'.

171 applicants for that block for 2025 roar. You were very lucky indeed to draw 2nd period with 6 ballots. Lotto ticket next.

    Cheers.

How do you find out how many applicants each block gets? That would be interesting to see.

22 March still seems too early to me. I think last year was the outlier, moving forward even earlier than normal to 16 March. Not sure why they did that.

16th week of the year is a good rule of thumb a local ground crew fella for a chopper company told me... Hard to say. Haven't put in for 2026 due to family needs, but would have gone for upper Okuru if I did. Been in there once before and would like to go back with the knowledge gained from the first attempt. Last time though we were second period and the fellas in before us spotlit the flats and appeared to have shot anything without much discretion, which was disappointing for us and resulted in some pretty switched on deer.

Anybody try for the Upper Bourke?

Agree with that, we had second period and only got a bit of noise in the last few days after a front came through.

That's some tin hat shit right there! It was my successful application - I haven't drawn a Haast block for 5 years.... Pissed off I couldn't go with the boys as my sister decided to get married during the roar..... how selfish of her...

Dave.. @The Hunters Club please accept my apologies for the rude comments of some others. You fellas do a great show, bring joy to the great unwashed and let's be honest,if you guys didn't film n show stuff like this, many wouldn't have a clue what's out there beyond the 50 km sign. Keep it up,and do look after those dodgy ankles. Might be time for duel walking poles for you....

Got drawn Whakapohai block today, last period. Don’t know much about the area. Boarders Moari Saddle & Mataketake Huts. 1st timer down there and expect it to have been hammered, but looking forward to spending time in the hills with the boy nonetheless.
