    I got a 64s on special at H&F $450.

It's so good it get's me into some truly horrible situations in the Kaimais due to the over confidence it inspires....Spend the extra cash & get a PLB at the same time.

I really wonder about the future of dedicated handheld gps units. For most purposes an android or hone wiih a good app like nz topo maps can do the same. Main limitations are:
Ruggedness ( but my phones have tolerated a lot of abuse and still good)
Battery life ( buy a recharge battery . works well)
archiving waypoints and tracks ( not many people mastrr this anyway)

I have an oregon 450, and the only time it has dropped out is when I was way down in a creek in a shitty valley up to my neck in onga onga with bugger all deer sign about. Think the orgeon was trying to tell me somthing.

I like the extra screen size of the touch screen units but they are a little clunky to use and probably not as durable as the 62/64 type. WHatever you get just make sure it has the high sensitivity reciever, if it doesnt it will barely work in your vege garden, let alone proper bush

Garmin Rino. So far so good. Radio is handy but doesn't work that well in tight bush. Touch screen is no trouble either, Even with wet dirty hands, Holds a strong signal in about 99.9% of places I have been.

Will be no better (or worse) than any other 5 watt uhf I would guess. Line of sight, and dependant on terrain.
I prefer a dedicated radio , and have the option of attaching a better Ariel if I want to give it a boost.

I still use my old yellow garmin.......it tells me where wagon is and has waypoints of previously visited spots....if you are in shitty patch of bush having trouble getting signal its time to sit down and have a wee break any way, gives unit time to sort out where the heck it is. knowing how far and in what direction a known point is gets me around block with confidence. still carry wobbly/compass.

I use a 62s with the Garmin Topo4 maps works well, also had a Plain 62 before it which I found much simpler to use. Will probably sell it soon and upgrade to the Rino.
