Also check with your airline regarding carrying firearms, some airlines won't do it for overfly reasons (the country they fly over en-route). Some countries also won't allow transit passengers with firearms as luggage (transit passengers in Australia come to mind). Emirates via Dubai is a direct flight to NZ and they allow firearms for luggage.
And when flying in NZ don't have the bolt in the same case as the firearm, it won't be allowed by the NZ airline, bolt must be packed separately and can't be carried on the plane as carry-on luggage.
Assuming you can, when you arrive in NZ, your firearm is put into a secure lockup near one of the luggage carousell's, only the Police will unlock it and get your firearms.
