I have seen everything from sniffing and tasting shit, there is really no need for that sort of carry on

yes we used to kid newbies on the taste test - but none fell for it - fresh sign looks like fresh sign - may take a little training but once ones eye is in never forgotten - deer hooves are sharp and fresh its a sharp looking print that then weathers with time -

Its unmistakable, and more-so during the roar when you're down wind (which is where you should be by the way) from a stinked up old stag

"See that" I said to a young fella.

"Pick a bit and smell it. No smell ay. Crush it between your fingers."

    YOUWW.

"Yep, that's stinging nettle" Bet you won't touch it again."

a lot of new hunters pay to much attention to sign - brasses me of to have someone continually pointing out deer shit - yes I have seen it -simply means to me we are in right area - more important with two hunters to be extra carefull with noise and trying to pick up the deer first before spotted - prints I am interested which way are they travelling and are they moving thru on a regular basis - and to where - sign simply means yup right area - now where are they -the areas I hunt in general its not a matter of if you are going to see a deer its just a matter of when

The coats of the young ones, so excluding any obvious stag smell, can on occasion bring to mind a cross between wood polish on several varieties of native timber in combination with roasted coffee.

nope SHE has been on deer since early age.....USED TO have access to deer farm which was great for steadiness... I have just worked on theory of going where ever she wants to take me...and either shooting what we get to or saying NO and walking away. nest of sleeping pigs has been a highlight.got two the first time and missed completely the second. she has led me onto quite a few deer...balls a few up too by whining when excited as they have moved off behind cover.
