At the start of the course everyone receives a list of suggested gear they will need.

Its up to you if you borrow, hire or buy the gear, you'll need it for the course though.

The Deerstalkers will supply some gear like the GPS's we used and some HUNTS rifles.

Everyone can do it, we had juniors as young as 13 and even some older people that attended. Non of us were super fit and we all came home smiling.

The river crossing training can be a bit stressfull for smaller framed persons, but I have to say our Hunts trainers had it well managed.

The hunts course that our branch runs as part of the class room night the instructor's all bring in there gear so all the students can see different guys set ups.
This includes packs, sleeping set ups, tents/fly's cooking set ups and clothing.
That way you get a wide range of items and then shown what would be considered the minimum vs the luxury that some take.
Our students as part of their course get a hand book, compass, high vis vest and emergency shelter, and a few other little bits.
It's a bloody good course which teaches them a lot.

    Pretty disappointing.

Does anyone know of any other alternative course i could look at doing instead of waiting a year? In the Christchurch/ Canterbury region
So your Branch is most likely running 1 course per year. Get hold of (email) other branches in your area and see if they have Hunts courses coming up. Otherwise join your local branch and get involved with their Branch hunts and range days. you will learn a lot just by doing this. Next year will come around in a flash.

Not sure what branch you tried but the Malvern branch may be able to help.

It's well worth it. If you're new to the outdoors and can't wait that long get in touch with Mountain Safety Council or your local tramping club for courses on navigation and river crossing.

IMO this course sounds great. There was nothing like that over here when I started out.
