About 40,000 hectares of pre feed then the green rain. All in the centre part of the Island and ranges to protect the Southern dotterel from predation. Then they are planning on systematically doing the rest of the Island over the next few years. There goal is to rid the Island of cats rats and possums.

Im not often bothered my 1080, but this one really gets me. A hunting, fishing and diving trip on Stewart island is quite high on my bucket list and now i feel like its going to be fucked for years.

    Any deer repellent being used?
My understanding is that there have been trials for its use in this drop.

They had trialed a meat based 1080 bait on Stewart Island a year of so ago which was apparently very successful on cats (70% kill rate). Not sure where that's at now.

Just maybe. Southern dotterel to be saved and what looks like effective deer repellent being used.

The deer population cannot be rebuilt by moving in from other areas. Different results on an island. I think whitetail will be hit hard by 1080 poisoning too.

@McNotty Deer repellant is being used within the bookable hunting blocks only.
Its not being used on a huge chunk of the island. Doc say they're not targeting deer, whilst definitely targeting deer.

I would absolutely dispute the fact that DOC is definitely targeting deer - it would be fair to say that many in DOC and various green organisations would not give a toss about bi-kill of deer in any 1080 drop including Stewart Island - but definitely targeting deer no - if they did they would have a pellet designed for that i.e likely bigger a stronger 1080 content and a different lure to that used for possums and certainly would not use repellent even if only in certain areas - DOC have said they will not target deer with 1080 - look some of you are jumping to conclusions way to early- bi kill on deer can be more than we as hunters would like we cannot deny that but just what it will be is very hard to judge - it depends on a number of factors - a high rat population and high possum population - more bait gone first night less for deer - condition of the deer and how much food they have available is also a factor -a 1080 possum drop into a high deer population with skinny deer doing it hard yes bi kill would be up there -wet soon after drop and bait becomes unpalatable- so wait and see - but DOC definitely targeting deer absolutely no

If they didnt want dead deer, then why wouldn't they use deer repellant in 100% of their drops? If they use in in some areas and not others, that seems pretty targeted to me.

one very simple reason cost the deer repellant pellets put up the cost hugely so to use it they will only do so where they are pushed into using it by public pressure - likely this is a hugely expensive operation - eg are they loading on NZ mainland and then flying it across - so they are using some repellant to appease hunters and trying to avoid the huge cost of doing it all with repellant and that's all - another thing to remember is where is the whitetail population on the Island how many live deep inland where they are not using repellent - no wait and see what bi kill there is - that is all we can do
