I first visited Stewart Island in the early 1980's. I walked a decent bit of of the northern circuit, and there were several NZFS hunter pairs operating out of the coastal huts. As a side line they were shooting and trapping cats. They were getting quite a few.

People who harp on about attaining predator free 20 something are living in La la land. They need to live in the bush for a few years and see how things actually work. A Science degree won't cut it out there in the harsh reality of dog eat dog.

The whole 176,000 hectares of Rakiura Stewart Island. Though they won't do the main area of Half-moon Bay as that will be done by ground techniques.

The best thing people apposed to 1080 because of the deer by kill can do is stump up with the funding for deer repellent.
If they spent the same amount of time searching for funds as they do whining about it, it may happen.
If they front up with the money, the authorities will have to start listening.
I was told by OSPRI the newest deer repellent baits(Prodeer?)cost no more than the standard baits. Unlike the Epro ones the repellent was added during manufacturing not another whole process afterwards. They inferred that there was no longer any reason not to use it.

A question for those closer to the place and issue ….. any more news/ explanations on the dead stoat?

From her ( among other things) it seems the media either consider it not that newsworthy, or DoC et al got them onside to shut it down somewhat?

Restraint is the better part of dignity. Don't justify getting even. Do not do unto others as they do unto you if it will cause harm.

does it not seem odd that it just happened to be on a track where it could be found - what are the chances - bit like the wallabys dumped around the North Island

Maybe we can train the dogs to eat cats?
