    Agreed

Especially this : The problem is few hunters take the time to develop the skills necessary to realize the capabilities of their gear, new or old. If you cannot hit a kill zone 9 out of 10 times at 100 yards, you have no business shooting at that distance. If you can do it at 300, 400, 500 or even further, then how is that unethical?

I agree with that, if you can place your bullet accurately for a clean kill at that range then there is no issue from that point of view.
The other aspect of ethics is that of "fair chase" as it could be deemed that past a few hundred metres the game do not view you as a threat as instinctively they are not concerned as that is too far for their natural enemies to attack from.
But then each to their own.

Ethics, I'm personally not sure if killing animals purely for sport or in the name of sport is really ethical anyway.

    So....

I don't care how its ends up in my freezer as long as the animal was taken quickly and cleanly and was utilised as far as possible with as little waste as possible.

    Vegetarian I am not

    Interesting read.

Another quote out of that article brings up a fairly good point relating to the ethics of LR hunting:

...criticizing another’s method, because its something you’re not capable of doing, is narrow-minded. It’s each hunter’s responsibility to only take responsible shots...

So as long as you are competent enough to take the shot ethically it will be humane, whether it is fair chase or not is another matter of personal beliefs. So those people who do not have the inclination or skill set to shoot at longer ranges should not criticize those that have put in the hours (and $$$) to be able to do so competently.

So as long as the animal is taken cleanly and humanely, it should be classed as ethical...

Ethics vary from country to country and the hunting traditions of each.
One of the age old problems of humanity, each believes their way is the only way rather than live and let live.

Long range hunting is not for me, I respect the skill ot takes but I prefer to stalk, it is trading one challenge for another.

I won't knock anyone who wants to do it though and neither should anyone say I am wrong for not wanting to do it.

Its the same reason that I don't regard longlining as fishing.

But then again I am not hunting or fishing to fill the freezer, I only do it for the sport and enjoyment.

+1 Spud, im in the same boat, if i want to eat venison i go out and buy it (maybe thats because of my success rate too) im a recreational hunter, into it for the challenge, adventure and to respect the animal, their meat....but as you say 'to each their own'.....
While I might not be as good as I once was, Im as good once as I ever was!
