Thread: Make a plan

When I was a young fella living in Afrikaans territory, I learned an old expression.... 'n boer maak 'n plan.

"A farmer makes a plan."

I'm no farmer but I like a good plan. I get the snobbery of the dedicated hardcore Alpine hunters, you know, the "proper" hunters. From time-to-time there's been shitty comments made about us "farm hunters". But sometimes needs must and the situation calls for minimizing effort through application of brains.

After numerous observations of target species behaviour in a specific location, a plan was indeed made and gravity was utilised. Wait until deer are above track... and shoot! [Gravity happens] Ta da!

Job complete, on time, no incidents.

Yeah, not real hunting but a smart and effective plan. Well done.

hah definitely minimizing efforts with quad bikes, good stuff. I got no problems with farm hunting, good for getting meat and have done a fair bit, even got a good 12 point red off a farm, but its not quite the same and i dont really count it.

To you guys knocking it. Wait until your sorry arses are too old to drag around your "public land" and see what you think about "farm hunting" then. Its all contextual.
Its quite likely that many "farm hunters" of today did more hard yards on public land before you were born than you will ever do.

I got no problem with farm hunting, actually am all for it when it’s controlling numbers and/or for meat.

Just saying i don’t view a 12 point farm stag the same as a 12 point public land stag.

And at the rate that a lot of farmland has been planted up, there's gonna be a need for a lot more 'Tahrs' to keep on top of expanding populations.
Every year forward gravity reminds us that its always gonna be here, and you just have to get smarter about how you deal with it.

to you silly buggers knocking shooting a good stag on a farm well what if they bugger just walked out of a large piece of DOC land -are you going to pass it up simply because its standing on a patch of grass -get real

well done that man..well done indeed.wish I was closer and could come and be gun bearer/carcass carrier for you,would love to get some venison to my parents in Taumarunui but its a wee bit far to just pop around with chilly bin full from here.

Still requires patience, being aware of the wind, knowing what your rifle does at that distance, and by the look of it a quick second shot on a now alert second deer. Well done boet!

congrats brains over brawn every day - wished we had quads years ago maybe knees not so stuffed now - every now and then did have a horse- lost art how to get deer onto a horse that simply cant stand the smell of it - deep little creek so bugger cant get away or spin sideways helps

Very interesting, ran into a local while out on the weekend in the public arena, both of us in mid 70's. He like myself have access to "farm deer" but he was of the same opinion that it's not quite the same as "crawling thru the shit" as it was put.

Reads as though you’re a bit testy about subject @Thar. Being someone who’s becoming broken down after hunting from the 70’s on I can see where you’re coming from but equally as an individual who shoots a lot of animal ‘pests’ on farms I also look on it as not real hunting to some degree. As you say, all depends on context.

You are dead right I am. Its like saying you don't deserve a retirement because we don't know if you ever actuallyy did any work.
