Still working things out as things have changed, when were you going down mate?
how far south you coming @Full noise
Roar is cancelled down south this year sorry fellas, might have to stay up in the north island.
No roar in kaikoura.
I heard the other day that not many deer are left in the quake zone around Kaikoura, a lot are getting shot on the new slips and clearings by a certain waro pilot in Hanmer Springs.
Surprised he has the time, he was giving the RHA a good thrashing the other week when @gadgetman and I were sitting up high on the St James and looking across that way...
Where the hell was my invite ?
I thought the Sth Is was still stuck in "spring", at this rate your roar should be around July/August:wtfsmilie:
Guess the green rain has a small silver lining ...no waro
So he did that for free then? Like its not his job, its a hobby?
I don't think what you have said is correct 223nut.
Take it from someone who is involved in the aviation industry, ANY commercial aircraft is extremely expensive to operate and maintain. There is no way this would have been done without payment.
No-one who owns any machine worth of the order of US$1,000,000 and that cost in the order of $1,000 plus per hour just to operate, without making any income out of it, is going to do this out of some sense of community spirit.
Believe me, when you are talking those sorts of figures, you need to keep the aircraft in the air for as many hours a day as possible because it is not making you any money sitting on the ground.
But perhaps you are right, maybe he would rather have watched the tele or gone fishing than take the opportunity to generate some revenue from his expensive machine.
Wow, you mean there was an opportunity to make a quick buck? And he took it?
WHAT A HERO!
WHAT A BLOODY GOOD BLOKE!
I never did understand why helicopter drivers are idols for some, especially in a case like this, where the guy is known to be illegally hunting a recreational hunting area. Not only did he make money off a civil defense emergency like a leech, he does not care that he is commercially operating in a public reserve, which is effectively stealing from me and you. But more than that, he thinks he is better than us because he does it blatantly, and gets away with it.
This is your hero? This guy?
FFS!!!
A Leech? Would you happily donate your time and 50k of your own money while trying to run a buisness for a civil defence issue? Bullshit.
It is not just the helicopter and his time that has to be paid for.
Costs of running an ATO are huge.
All I know of the bloke in question is he had a good name among my peers when I was in the industry.
And those wanting him to fall out of the sky coz he shoots a few deer he shouldnt, is fucking pathetic. Check yourselves.
I just hope people that think that, are never in need of someone with his skills, to save your life one day.
I know he has certainly risked his life numerous times to help people.

Can't be bothered dealing with this stupid conversation.... Well said @R93
He did not 'donate' 50K to anyone. To who? Who was the check made out to?
Save your hero worship for people who actually deserve it. Not a word against the illegal hunting from either of you.
Let helicopter drivers just be helicopter drivers. You hire them to take you places.
You may want a read what posted again.
I am pretty sure I mentioned someone wanting him to fall out the sky for shooting a few deer he shouldn't.
I don't see anyone hero worshiping either.
Providing a different opinion/argument maybe.

I'm no expert on waro or legal definitions of crown land managed by doc but I would be very surprised if he was hunting from a chopper in an area he wasn't allowed. What the hell does it matter to you anyway Carlsen how does this affect you? Your profile says port chalmers... Long way from were this is going on
Oh dear! I sense moral indignation in this thread but sense it may well be a mask for jealousy.
Having worked one way or another in the venison industry for a fair while, I have never once come across any so called hunter to turn down a chance at shooting deer from a machine.
Way back on the other forum I got abused by all types because of what I did for a crust.
One of the most outspoken members jumped at my offer to have a go, when we met one day.
He come out on a couple runs and eventually shot a load for me after a rather shakey start. 😆
He said he loved every second of it and had a new outlook on what was involved.
He became a pretty good mate and we have hunted together a few times.
However, I still like to sometimes call him a hypocrite as he never once questioned where we were or if we were allowed to be there.😆

Halo's just a top chopper pilot, doing what he has done for years, trying to pay the bills. And sometimes he may push the boundaries, possibly even fly over them, who knows, most of us are never there to witness it if he does. And if it should happen to hit the fan I would happily fly with him, he's one helluva pilot.
If you've got a gripe regarding WARO, then take your grizzles to the dept involved, you know that anti hunter, holier than thou dept that is hell bent on killing our environment with 1080. They are the ones that allow it, they are the ones that encourage it, they are the ones that issue the concessions. And until WARO is no longer allowed, there will be helicopter pilots trying to earn a living doing what they do best, which may very well be wild animal recovery.
I'd suggest we just all stop the bitchin' and just get out there and do some huntin', - the choppers dont get them all!
So to sum up:
1: Roar is cancelled in south island due to no deer left, helicopter shot them all
2: All we do is argue down here anyway
Totally agree that poaching private land or an RHA when on waro ops is bullshit and shouldn't be done. Anyone doing so should at minimum, loose their concession.
I just get fucked off with the bullshit attacks by people on here regarding a person's character.
(I have only met the pilot in question briefly while on frost protection once.)
It is like being caught for poaching in a machine is the greatest crime in the world.
He broke a rule/law.
How many of you wanting him to fall out the sky or think he is a leech have never broken a hunting permit rule?
Or maybe got a bit heavy on your vehicles gas pedal?

People are losing their vehicles, their rifles and their firearms licenses for it down here, as well as getting a conviction and fined. Since when does doing it in a helicopter make it ok?
I wasn't attacking his character, I was describing it. I didn't make him do it.
So they should.
Yet how many have been done to that extreme for poaching public land?
We the public do not own the animals on private or public land so it is not theft. It is illegal hunting.
There is imo, a difference here and it shows how completely selfish/unobjective people can be.
Get caught ilegal hunting on foot and you may loose your FA, guns and vehicle but at the end of the day you can still earn a living.
After a while you may get everything back depending on circumstances.
How is it fair if they confiscate 10-20 times the investment in gear a poacher on foot would likely have had, along with a means to earn a living?
