Heading into the South Mathias over Easter - just curious what the terrain is like and if there are any camping spots up high on the true right. Cheers

Might be a bit crowded there over Easter, but one can be surprised and have the place to yourself.

I should also say, very good advise on location Moa Hunter

Will be very crowded, I know of 19 hunters in four groups going up there, some already in there.

Already crowded now! Bloody vehicles for Africa. Several helicopter loads yesterday heading all over. The place has gone crazy.

Jerusalem Stream-no no no .Taboo @Moahunter.Thats on Manuka Pt run, so gain permission first.Doc block starts upstream from Jerusalem St confluence unless the boundary has changed since I last hunted there.The Mathias catchment has a particular vegetation not dominated by the usual Canty high country user friendly Beech forest.Tight mongriel constantly wet Halls Totara,Mt.Cedar, Silver Pine,etc West Coast type scrub.You,ll spend more time crawling on hands n knees trying to move around.The numbers are there but theres no real defined animal sidlings to travel on.Probably due to the broken nature of the country & the poxy scrub.Better to glass from a high point for roaring/ambushing rather than trying to bush stalk in their domain.Its stagging how the boys with the big head gear can move in that shyte and yet they do in a silent manner in that catchment.No real flat terraces come to mind for pitching a pup tent up the Sth Branch in the valley floor.Tight interlocking opposing spurs run down sharply to the valley floor along with running screes in the rills.Sth Branch stream bed dominanted by big goolies so no walk in the park.As mentioned give Blacksmiths Pt a whirl on dawn.Good luck

@bluebaiter222 tenure review released all that Jerusalem country a few years ago. Manuka Point boundary way down below now. Look on DoC map.

@Mathias cheers for the block update.So with J Stm now fair game,that's well worth a glass.Holds more animals as warmer,better feed,more open and getting out on the fringe of the rain shadow .For long distance travelling Nth Is jokers, plse don't be a hero and start boofing 8-9-10 pointers for wank photos .I get it you'rve travelled a long way.All barred up on a mish.Let those up n comers go.Then you really are the worthy hero.Next trip you might cash in on the true Mathias 40 x 40 of a life time.They are there .If you want blood n guts wank photos post up 6 sets of hind back straps hanging on the machine skid & I'll give you as many like,wicked ,sick bro, awesome ,too much, ego adulation on Facebook.Feel free to differ, but we are all currently in aguably the second great error of NZ hunting with an abundance of game.More than enough to go round so you won't miss out.I,m about to go scrub on public land myself and a bit discussed to learn the out going previous party have done exactly what I've described above and me and old mate have have been leaving the up n comers to mature for the last 3 roars but comes to naught when the Facebook heros turn up.Spoze their dogs will have something to chew on

And it continues this morning.......4 or 5 vehicles up the road, fancy bloody lifted jobbies, all the bells and whistles, and noisy to boot. And it rained rather heavily from the NW overnight. a neighbour has had a case of blatant poaching, spotlight and truck in the bushes, all lights off when seen by the locals. And we had one this morning tying to drive to the A Frame! Drove in our gate that had a "No Access" sign on the gate, all the way up our lane, found he couldnt go anywhere. Came back out, all the time watched by one of us, and then was just gonna drive past. Stopped him and asked what he was up to and was told he rang us and the neighbours for permission. Was told politely that he hadnt rung us, and the track was bloody impassable anyways.

On a good note, was talking to a young fella thats not scared to put in the hard yards. And found a really nice stag, was able to get some phone footage of it, and put it to bed. But then had to go to work the next day, so hes hoping it will still be around in a week or 2. Fortunately its a bit too difficult for the average weekend hunter.

I dont cross a river much,i let the deer cross the river to me.Lot of fancy shiney huntn trucks around loaded to the hilt.All these young guys must have good high payed jobs.Heading south or north thru our town.
Il stay home for easter,avoid the crowds.Smart old deer will still be around at the end of April and so will i.

Just came out of the wilberforce. Lots of trucks and people. Chopper charging up and down the valley a couple times. Imagine it will be ridiculous in there Over easter. Weather was Also shit
