Successful hunt for me and the boy

Went for a hunt with my son and a few mates last weekend. Weather was a bit off and on in the Waikato but was an awesome weekend with 4 deer being taken. My son shot his first deer on private land, neck shot! I headed in to the public because I'm a bit like that.

Started at about 0630, late I know but was up late the night before. Wind was a bastard for a start but I found some consistent wind and started working in to it with the dog. At about 0830 he started to wind something so we stalked in, he was working well across the wind to zero in. He started to slow right down so I knew we were getting close, I slowed right down and was looking through the bush thinking it was a bit cold and damp for a bed down spot. Dog must have got a bit impatient with my slowness and ranged out a touch and put a spiker up about 1m in front of him and about 8m in front of me. It ran off as I gave a fawn call to hopefully stop it. The dog came back in and I gave him a bit of a "what up c&*t!" for walking up to it. Anyways, stalked closer and picked it up about 30m from where it was bedded down, could only see the head (looking at me) and high chest. Took the shot at about 20m with the 300wsm and dropped where it stood. Bullet went through the lungs, scraped the back bone and just penetrated the diaphragm and nicked the liver on the way out. Carried it out whole, every time I do that I swear it is the last time.
