The opposite in fact as demonstrated by the note left in the Macaulay hut at the end of a cull in that catchment which pointed out areas they had seen good bulls that had not been shot. Delivered by airmail.. hand written by the shooter.
The title of this thread is 'Tahr cull Doc Betrayal' What has Doc Betrayed if there is no current Tahr management plan ? The Conservation Act - which governs Doc does not say that Doc has to do anything to aid or promote recreational hunting. Read 'Part 6 section 38' Titled 'Hunting etc' . This is a bad situation for RH.There should be a current plan just as there should be protection of recreational hunting opportunities on public land but there is not, only provision to allow Recreational Hunting.
In a nutshell, we are in a bad place. Unless we collectively do something about it nothing will change.
Have a look at the protection given under the Conservation Act to Trout and other salmonids and recreational fishing. Hunting needs to occupy a similar position under the law.

Just heard from a reliable source that DOC plans to 'remove' 30,000 Tahr from throughout the Tahr range starting in the next three weeks. Has anyone else been made aware of this ???

The current Tahr plan (there is one, but old) sets a limit of 10,000 animals across the range. Estimates of the population that I have seen have been up to over 50,000, and well outside the range. I don't think anyone thinks that this many is ok. Its been well publicised by Sage that they will be targeted back to 10,000.

Ive heard gossip about a target of elimination by Sage, but have never seen that recorded as a fact. I would personally be happy with a greatly reduced population back to near the 10,000. So a 30,000 cull is not outside the ball-park.

At the NZDA national conference Sage said there were currently 36000 Tahr..... obviously too many...Guys need to shoot more Nannies...

Pick a number, any number everyone is a winner....mate.....

I hear they are a little short of funds to sort it though...lead free projectiles won't be helping the budget either....

DOC have acknowledged that the lead from buckshot used culling Tahr is affecting Kea, hence a move away from buckshot.

Yeah, a mate and his missus ran into several DOC types only four days ago up in the Karangarua while on a four day hunt.
They were pretty damn ignorant towards my mate and his lady. One remarked making the most of any Thar as ( WE) will be killing as many as possible over the whole Thar range,,Thar have got to go. My mate simply said good luck on that one.
Just of interest they observed 32 trampers over four days.
