    Tips for increasing shooting range?

Just recently got a new rifle:

Remington 700 XCR II (extreme conditions rifle) in .280 <-- what do you guys think of the rifle and the trYnite finish?
    leupold 4-12x40 VX-II
and also a Harris swivel bipod

I am currently using Federal ammo. people have recommended i test out every brand available for the .280 calibre so i can find the one my gun 'enjoys' the most. (i dont have access to reloading gear)

Should i change the stock? (currently got the original with the 'grips') if so for what benefits? and what can i do to get this gun shooting longer ranges? (by longer ranges i just mean being able to confidently shoot at ranges of 300-400 metres with faith in my gun to kill.

I know i need some core tools like a range finder etc.

What experiences have you guys had with r700's? (good or bad)

oh and also im new here so hello

    RANGE TIME !

before you change anything, go shoot, then go shoot some more...

IMHO most people NEVER get to the limitations of their rifle (modern, reasonable quality firearms)

    That's a nice scope you've got there. I've got a 4-12 VX1, but it doesn't even come close to my 3-9 VX2. Awesome scope.

I went and picked up a $250 Nikko Stirling rangefinder, a bit of paper, a pen and some targets and went out on the farm to shoot at 100, 200, 300 and 400m. Now I've got a drop chart out to 400m (didn't bother going any further) for my 140g and 160g 7mm-08 loads. Print of a little table, cut it up, laminate it and whack it on your stock. Manufacturers charts for ammo can't really be trusted, plus if you roll your own you gotta get out and shoot it anyway.

Once you've done that those pesky goats are in real trouble.

Welcome to the forum Scree Slope. Good advice here already so just get in so trigger time and learn what your rifle shoots like.
It takes 43 muscle's to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger pull.
What more do we need? If we are above ground and breathing the rest is up to us!
Rule 1: Treat every firearm as loaded
Rule 2: Always point firearms in a safe direction
Rule 3: Load a firearm only when ready to fire
Rule 4: Identify your target beyond all doubt
Rule 5: Check your firing zone
Rule 6: Store firearms and ammunition safely
Rule 7: Avoid alcohol and drugs when handling firearms
