What do you take for food while hunting?

So a mate and I are heading out this weekend for a 4 day hunt ...

Usually I take things such as baked beans, 2 minute noodles, pasta snacks, musli bars, maybe abit of fresh meat for the first night (with the hope i get more fresh meat during the trip) coffee, milk powder, maybe musli for breaky etc and afew suppliment drinks

He seems to take real fresh stuff, he is talking about rump steak, pork steak, mash potatoes flakes, bacon, pasta, sausages, bread, coffee ....

Thoughts? what do you normally pack?

Nowadays I just take in Freeze Dried Meals such as Backcountry Couisine etc for dinners, salami (or tuna) cheese and pita breads for lunch and either 1 Square Meals or pre portioned oats (with milk powder and sugar already mixed in) for brekky. As for snacks I take peanut slabs and nut bars. I will also pack in a couple of onions, garlic and some butter to go with some (hopefully) fresh venny.

I try and keep weight down to a minimum as my pack is heavy enough with all the hunting / camping gear.

If you stop eating meat several days before you go and take no meat at all your hunting will improve tenfold...

The rule is max energy at the least weight. That certainly rules out baked beans.

The new dehydrated water you can get is very good too.

It all depends on how much you want to carry.

Chuck the two minute noodles aside and get yourself some Mi Goreng noodles, they are superior. I tend to add egg, pea's, chopped sausage/sizzlers and/or shaved ham.. makes a basic but good meal.

Pasta meals that you can add shit too (sausages/peas)
Raro + aqua tabs - Always good for energy
    Drinking choc mix - evenings.
    Peanut slabs, crackers, bread/buns
For a couple of nights, I just take up and go for breakfast.

I've also got some heat and eat meals from a mate who works at Prepared Foods Processing Ltd in Palmerston.

I'm not exactly a light packer, I enjoy my food.

Just a few quick idea's off the top from our family tramping holidays
Take a chux multicloth as a towel - lightweight easy to rinse out
We would package our meals into daily requirements
No cans or packaging - as keeping weight down is important
Breakfast - porridge / cut up and add dates for variety
Lunches - Hard cheese, salami & cabin bread - cup of soup

Of late on day hunts I have enjoyed a can of corned beef on crackers / thermos of soup also goes down well.
Tea - Rice / pasta based meals - prepacked sachet meals ex supermarket
    Tea bags / milk powder
    Powerade

Usually a heat and eat pasta meal in the bag for breaky. use same water for a cuppa. Dishes = 1 spoon and 1 cup. Use left over water to clean them.
Day snacks a mix of peanut slabs/picnic bars. Dinner 1st night is a subway roll. After that is something similar to breakfast.
There to enjoy the time, not wash pots etc

Huh ? Had to check the calendar to see if it suddenly jumped to April 1st...

What to you add to hydrate ? Some water perhaps

I'm not a fan of freeze-dried meals, tastes like cardboard to me, some of the veggie packs are ok. Easy enough to carry stuff like millet, couscous, pasta, and some spices. Oats or muesli for brekkie. Lots of nuts and dried fruit. Salami.

Pasta and Rice used to be good, but they're now (according to the Mrs Paleo Diet) akin to eating your own children.

So now its dehydrated and vacpacked (by me) veg and stews, etc ... lotsa protein, lotsa veg.

OSM bars are the shit ... although the full one square meal is WAY too big ... I like the quarter OSM Bite Size Snacks ..

    Nuts .... nuts ... nuts ... nuts .....

Porridge always was and always will be a must ... good slow release carb.

Berocca / Rehydrate tabs are good for your dehydrated water supply (just pop them in the mouth) as is a good old fashioned disprin (aspro clear) . Berocca can be drunk hot as well ..

the key for me was and always be simplicity , and dont deviate too far from your at home diet ....
