Heard a few in the foothills west of Christchurch last night after dark, but only really moaning. One reasonably close but he shut up when I moaned back at him.

The boys have been a bit more vocal today. I was thinking of going bush for a look tomorrow but think I'll wait until we have had some rain.

just returned from a couple of days up behind Rangi hut in Ruahines, plenty of deer seen, mostly hinds and yearlings but managed to get within 50 yards of an 8pt stag probably 3 or 4 years old , he seemed to be still in summer mode, no sign of a mane or swollen neck, and only interested in filling his belly, so i expect the roar is a few weeks away around here which is about normal .
