    Would you consider this ethical

I have been curiously looking through the uk deer stalking training programme (dsc1) and came accross the following
advice dished out for suitable time to wait after shooting a deer.

Immediately load another round, apply the safety catch and then wait. You should learn to recognise the behaviour of deer, shot in different parts of the body, as this will dictate how long you should wait before following up. Whatever the circumstances, wait at least five minutes.

Practicality aside, 5 minutes seems like a long time to wait before administering a coup de gras shot.

I think it's to stop the animal getting pumped with adrenalin and going for another run. Just let it run off as calm as possible.

Don't need to wait if you blow it's brains out

The five minute rule is for the .243 and 6.5's, to give them a chance to die...with any decent calibre you just walk up and start gutting

Except if you shoot them at 1.5ks, then it takes you the rest of the day to reach the body!

So how long does it take you to make that 4K walk in the mornings Maca?
It takes 43 muscle's to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger pull.
What more do we need? If we are above ground and breathing the rest is up to us!

Yes, If you had shot it with alegendry 7mm08 then the you would have killed it, it would have skinned and gutted itself and carried itself all the way back to your transport.
All those with dogs waiting no longer fear death. Those with many dogs waiting even welcome it in it's time.

Mikee - I see you are from Nelson. As the 7mm-08 caliber is a Ponsonby Latte sippers pill, would you please kindly return your firearm and all associated ammunition and reloading equipment back to it's rightful place

Sure you will find Pengy, that if the shot is not a bang flop and takes off through the bush, it is best to wait 5-10min (which seems more like 2hrs) as Toby said. This will let the animal settle down and a better chance to recover. Easier to follow the blood trail of a slow moving deer. Chasing after it will only push it further away.

Of course if a good shooter hit it with .243 it d drop like a sack of shit never to rise again ...

No problem with that, Don't own one nor have any ammo for one, in fact would not be caught dead with one. But then I consdier any trip to the North Island and overseas trip and coffee comes in powder in tins or jars!!!

Anyone with a 7mm08 will have a mate drooling along behind only too happy to do the carrying...easily recognizable by the ipod wires hanging from his head.

It just seems a bit strange to me in these "enlightened " days to advocate that you shoot an animal and then sit down and have a smoke before making sure it is dead. If you applied the same rule to the Abbatoir, I think we all know what would happen.
I would have thought this is just fuel to the antis.

"If you applied the same rule to the Abbatoir, I think we all know what would happen" I have never been in an abattoir however I'm sure when the unions held all the power that it would have been tools down at 10am, 2pm and 3pm without exception.

I hear what you are saying Pengy which is why I believe in 1 shot kills and have a pretty good record. Things don't always go to plan. When a deer is shot they don't know what it is. Unlike most humans who say "oh fuck, I've been shot" and lie down. Deer will take the path of least resistance and depart rapidly for a short distance.
I have seen a friend shoot the jaw off a hind. He was beside himself and still is to this day. We tracked that deer for quite some time. We would get close and then hear it moving through the bush and subsequently would find the pool of blood where it had been. We never caught up with it and the deer would most likely have starved to death.
A stag I shot from 15m bolted and stopped 30m away right in sight of my brother who put a hole 1" from where mine was (proof we are related) After cutting it up, and seeing the lung damage, it was already dead on it's feet. Had the deer seen my brother, it would have bolted again of the side possibly not to be found and a waste of a deer.

I'd wait longer than that if I knew I gut shot it and it ran off. If I knew I gut shot it and I had a chance at a follow up I'd take it right away, I hate seeing an animal suffer, I always want to kill it as quick as possible. I guess it all comes down to circumstance; use your head and keep the quickest death possible your objective.
