I think I saw on here from DPT that you can use a standard muffler with 6.5prc. @Friwi ?
On factory length barrels you can use a standard suppressor for the 6.5 prc. Other wise go with a magnum if you are trimming your gun shorter.

What about putting the 3K into your existing rifle ? 3K goes a long way towards a new barrel when needed, two sets of really good QD mounts and a target scope to swap on and off.

My current rifle is about as far removed from a gong gun as possible....

Whats wrong with using that as a gong gun?
It'll make you a better shot on animals, recently spent a day on gongs with a fully wooded 303 and iron sights out to 1000 yards heck it was fun.
Look back on Tim Watsons posts mate I'm sure he did something similar with a rem 700 300 win mag and sightron for less with great results

super low cost but damn accurate, but he has commented that its too heavy to hunt with with the 5-25 vortex on it and DPT supp

Typically you shoot a lot of rounds from a gong gun and it get's hot read burned throat, heated wood etc. It would be a waste IMHO to use your Sako.

Buy a Howa as a barrel'd action and put in a chassis or target stock.

Yeah I understand that but also believe it's more sensible than picking 6.5 prc which will eat itself in well under a 1000 rounds on gongs, not to mention the component shortage.

The hotrod chamberings are pretty amazing though. My 7mm fatmax I sold in 2020, has fired less rounds now than when I sold it, so barrel life is increasing.

I wouldn't pick 6.5 PRC either, it would be 300 PRC. There are still usable 30 cal projectiles around.

I personally like using a bigger projectile which make bigger splashes at the other end, easier to observe.
