.243 etc is too big and too expensive to be an all rounder, by comparison. You can shoot rabbits with any large chambering.

I miss my AR terribly now, but my new Sauer 100 is a very nice rifle. Very nice to have a .223 back in the safe.

So using that reckoning, the humble 22 long rifle is the best all rounder.

Shot my 1st deer with one
