Question 3.1" eye relief too small?

Hi all, in the market for a new scope, wanting to buy vortex or Leupold for the warranty. Budget limits me to lower end so looking at the Vortex Diamondback 4-12x40 but it has an eye relief of 3.1" at max zoom. Plenty of reviews state that this is the only downfall but is it a deal breaker? I suppose best practice would be to take rifle in store and see how far back the scope can sit/where my natural rest is.

Otherwise I've been looking at the VX Freedom from Leupold. Ideally want to buy a 2nd hand Leupold but haven't had any come up as of yet.

    Cheers

Yea other option is to buy new loopy, 3-9x40 freedom is around $500. But can theoretically get a better scope for a similar price if its second hand

I picked up one of them for $350 2nd hand...good scope it is too.
for my normal 0-300 yard type shooting I cant see need for higher spec glass wear...

3.1 eye relief is only a problem if you are shooting something with a big recoil... I got 3.3 inches on a 300 nm... made a light contact once today.
