Now if it was a 45/70 I could tell you lots, I think it a short range cartridge that has good stopping power

As long as it goes bang i wont be disappointed.
45/70 would be cool but there was no option.

do people use iron sights or scopes normally?

Close range? Because I'm blind I'd put a low power on but I shoot all mind with open sights, prefer aperture

Noooo 199p, pls leave it with open sights, that is a real classic...

Nice bush gun, caliber good to 200yds or so, so no real need to put a scope on it.

A lot of gunsmiths will try to sell you on the idea of one of he modern coatings like gunkote, cerakote etc, but keeping with the "keep it classic theme" I'd ask around on the forum and find a specialist that has a good reputation for blueing.

Isnt it a Winchester ? Therefore top ejecting. I would of thought putting a scope on could be problematic for that reason alone.
Mate shoots a Marlin in 30/30 and has found the Hornady Leverlution amo to be the way to go

Yip great calibre and rifle .Had the Winchester 30-30 with peep sights ,when I was younger and the eyes were better .I find they come up to the shoulder real nice for me and everything lines up no mucking around .Winchester top ejects but if you want to put a fixed power scope on it there is an offset mount to allow the shell to eject without hitting the scope .I have a plastic cornea I think it is so changed to a Marlin 30-30 which side ejects and put a Leupold FX3 6x42 on it I love it .They seem to carry well in the hand are great in tight bush and are not dainty so can be used as a walking stick or held in front to push through the bush .With the new Hornady leverolution ammo they are extremely accurate at 100 mtres .I am waiting for a youngun with good eyes to push it out at the range and see how accurate they are further out .You hit something with a 30-30 and they go down for keeps .Have a Browning A bolt in 243 if I go to an area with longer shots likely but would be confident shooting the 30-30 out to 150 mtres with the leverolution ammo .Have a mate who constantly gives me grief about the marlin says they are great for driving fence posts in or testing the depth of the dunny ,funny how whenever we go to the range he wants to shoot her and easily gets 1inch Moa at 100 mtres

If it stop ejecting get some face protection or quickly learn to angle the rifle when you pull the lever. I got a pump action .22 hits me in the head every friggen time!
