If you roll your own hands down the 6.5x55
Blows the 308 out of the water
If you just buy the ammo the 308 wins
Even when I was stoking the 08 up it still can't keep up the 55 I have now
Will be factory loads unfortunately I'm reloading iltarite haha
For hunting I prefer the 6.5x55.
Either one will be good. :)
I was in a similar situation so bought 1of each and never looked back.
If I had bought my Sako in 6.5 I doubt I have got a 308
ive been using a x55 for a long time its always done the job for me im mainly bush hunting started out with a m96 and just bought a tikka in the same cal as said above if you hand load and its not hard the x55 will really come into its own
Makes no difference mate.

My opinion is that it actually does make a difference. Here's why:
308 factory loads better long range (over 250m) as flatter shooting.
6.5 better in every other way due mainly to less recoil, slower bullet speed whacking all it's energy into the animal rather than passing straight through. Others may have different or opposite experience or opinions, but I've owned two .308s and got sick of being booted while range shooting. I also lost a couple of stags with .308. But since changing to 6.5 every animal I've shot goes down and basically stays down on the spot and the recoil is unnoticeable. I've shot competitively against .308 at 400m and kept up too, so once you know where she shoots, I reckon 6.5 is the winner

plenty of good coffee shops that will sell you a latte down in Dunners...why not split the difference and go 7mm/08??????
personally it would be .308 for me.
just spotted laminate model in the for sale section...... interesting what he wants to trade it for.308:D
The 308 kills very well from 0-500m no problem. Shot placement and projectiles is the key in all cals .Losing a couple of stags will be shot placement or crap projectiles at that range rather than the CAL. Both the 6.5 or 308 will do the job just fine but the 308 has the added value of using 125gr right up to 200gr so gives you plenty of options. How short was your 308? I dont find the 308 boots stuff all. Mine one is 24 inch thou, and barrel lenght can make a difference but a good limp saver and they a pussy cat to shoot.
My REM 700 with the new H S prescision stock only has a thin hard butt pad, hence basicly no recoil pad and i use it with hardly no noticeable recoil that worry you.
In the field its fine, on the range firing multi shots i put on a pull on recoil pad just to have it a very pleasant feel.
90% of people couldn't reliably shoot animals over 200m in a hunting situation so for someone who isn't reloading, using a rangefinder and a chart there is really no appreciable difference between any of the calibers in that general size.
Something to note if you do get into longer range shooting. The 6.5 isn't a poleaxing caliber past 350-400 meters and I'd happily shoot the 308 out to 7-800. I've had 3 308s 9ver the years none of them were big kickers . Recoil is a real bonus on all of the 6.5s very tame indeed.

Sold my m96 and went 308 for bush work and mid distance shooting. Won't fly as well as a x55 but I didn't buy a 30 Cal to fly well.

If you are worried about the recoil of a .308 chuck a can on it, I have a DPT on mine and it made it a lot more pleasant on the shoulder and a hell of a difference on the ears. That said, either will do the job just fine. I've actually been tempted to get a 6.5x55 for a while, only thing holding me back is the lack of any decent aperture sights for the old Swedish rifles for a decent price, that and the AR was higher up the wishlist.
6.5 all the way.
I still have 1000 ft lbs at 780y.
never had much luck with my 308s

Haha think I'll go 308 I'll that way heaps of different cartdridges bush pig capable etc ! Cheers boys!
Also depending on my funds if I'm a bit short on cash there a brno 308 for sale on here and not to seem rude or talk behind the guy who's selling its back but would this be a good buy for the money or not?
A m96 falls easy in that price range there's still good ones around
well you wouldn't go far wrong at that.....but test fire to make sure you can get group of less than say???? 2" with say factory federal bluebox 150grn. if you cant get it to try but have contact who can...just as good.
those set triggers are a love em or hate em thyp thing...piece of piss to use either as std or set .
Why not both?
Never owned a .308, but those I've fired I haven't enjoyed... My 6.5x.284 on the other is an absolute delight, and performs like a champ
Thanks Micky duck yeah I'll try tee something up cause I'm just a tad worried about the slight pitting that was mentioned. I had a savage axis 308 and I'm not 100% but I'm bloody sure the axis is lighter than a tikka and the recoil wasn't to bad and I'm not a soild guy haha. I just a very unfortunate series of events where most my of fire arms had to be sold which a was a kick in the balls! BUT I'm back into it and want a good meat gathering rifle that'll last. As long as it shoots good at 100m and maybe 200/300 meter once in a blue moon. I'm happy so just wanna make sure I make a good decision if it drops the animal I'm happy! (Obviously with me doing my part right shot placement etc) I really appreciate your guys advice means heaps!
I know of a bush pigged howa if your interested

What caliber and how much bro what's the details matey
My M96 has a mirror bore and is in excellent condition with matching serial numbers... I'd never part with it. I paid $400 for it 10 years ago. With a new Timney trigger fitted, it out-shoots my new Tikka T3 to 200m. Not bad for a rifle over a hundred years old which likely saw military service. 156gn Norma doing 2560ft/sec are the business.
Just to add a final fact, if you're going a tikka then consider that the .308 will only really take to the lighter projectiles. The 1/10 barrel twist isn't suitable for the heavier pills so you might as well go a swede.
I am uniquely qualified to say- get a 6.5!
I've had a few guys tell me the lighter projectiles in a .308 t3 shoot cloverleaf while the 200gn + struggle to achieve a 5 shot MOA group. Same for .243 as well.

Why would you use a 200 grn plus projectile in a 308 anyway?
